Almond

Almonds bloom earlier than any other nut tree, as early as February some years and continue until March. Bees are important for pollination in commercial orchards and two varieties are necessary for cross-pollination to be successful.

Almonds are mentioned as far back in history as the Bible. They were a prized ingredient in breads served to Egypt's pharos.

Almonds are rich in the vitamins and minerals that help build a healthy heart, especially vitamin E. These little nutrient nuggets are cholesterol free.

Almond trees in bloom, a showcase for nature. A closer look at this man-made display of nature reveals in detail the colours of these flowers, which range from the purest white to pink.

Almond trees produce fruit which is commonly referred to as a nut, though it is technically a drupe similar to a cherry. Unlike true nuts, almonds develop a leathery flesh outside of the shell, which is usually discarded.
